What are Endoscopic Procedures?

Endoscopy is a specialized technique that utilizes a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera and light source. This tube, called an endoscope, is inserted through natural openings or small incisions to visualize the internal organs. Endoscopic procedures offer several advantages over traditional surgery, including:

  • Minimally invasive: Smaller incisions translate to less pain, scarring, and faster recovery.
  • Outpatient or short hospital stay: Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require a shorter hospital stay.
  • Faster recovery: Patients generally experience quicker recovery times and return to daily activities sooner.
  • Improved visualization: Endoscopes provide a magnified view of the internal organs, allowing for detailed examination and precise treatment.

What we offer

Endoscopic Procedures Offered by Dr. Arpit Bansal:

  • Upper Endoscopy: Examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine) to diagnose ulcers, inflammation, and other abnormalities.
  • Colonoscopy: Evaluates the entire colon and rectum for polyps, cancer, and other abnormalities. During the procedure, polyps can be removed for further analysis or treatment.
  • Sigmoidoscopy: Focuses on the lower part of the colon and rectum, particularly useful for diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease and rectal bleeding.
  • Capsule Endoscopy: Utilizes a swallowable capsule with a camera to examine the small intestine, which is not directly accessible through conventional endoscopy.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): Combines X-rays and endoscopy to diagnose and treat problems in the bile ducts and pancreas, such as gallstones, strictures, and tumors.

TESTIMONIAL

You are in good care

For months, I suffered from heartburn and stomach discomfort. Dr. Bansal recommended an upper endoscopy to investigate the cause. The procedure was quick and painless, and the results helped identify the source of my problem. I’m grateful to Dr. Bansal for his expertise and for recommending the right diagnostic approach.

Mr. Raj Sharma (Upper Endoscopy)

I was apprehensive about a colonoscopy, but Dr. Bansal and the staff at Navjeevan made the experience as comfortable as possible. During the procedure, a polyp was found and removed. Dr. Bansal explained everything clearly and put me at ease. I’m relieved to have this potential issue addressed early on, thanks to the colonoscopy.

TESTIMONIAL

You are in good care

I experienced persistent rectal bleeding, and Dr. Bansal advised a sigmoidoscopy to determine the cause. The procedure was minimally invasive and well-tolerated. The results helped rule out serious conditions, which was a huge relief. I appreciate Dr. Bansal’s clear communication and reassuring presence throughout the process.

Mr. Akash Malhotra (Sigmoidoscopy)

Due to internal bleeding, traditional endoscopy wasn’t feasible in my case. Dr. Bansal suggested capsule endoscopy, which was a new option for me. The process was smooth, and the capsule captured detailed images of my small intestine, aiding in the diagnosis. I’m thankful for Dr. Bansal’s innovative approach and for helping me get the answers I needed.

GENERAL QUESTION

How can we help you

Most endoscopic procedures are performed under sedation or light anesthesia, minimizing discomfort. You might experience some mild throat soreness or bloating after the procedure, but these usually resolve quickly.

If the endoscopy reveals abnormalities, your doctor will discuss the findings with you and recommend the next steps. This might involve additional tests, biopsies for further analysis, or even minimally invasive treatment during the endoscopy itself, depending on the situation.

The duration of an endoscopy varies depending on the specific procedure and the complexity of the case. Generally, it ranges from 15 minutes to an hour.

Our doctor will provide specific instructions on resuming diet after the procedure. Typically, you might be advised to start with clear liquids and gradually progress to soft foods as tolerated.

Following an endoscopy, especially if you received sedation, strenuous activities might be restricted for a short period. Your doctor will advise you on specific activity limitations and the appropriate timeframe for resuming your usual routine.

Due to the potential effects of sedation, it’s strongly recommended to arrange for transportation home after an endoscopy. This ensures your safety and allows you to recover comfortably.

While generally safe, endoscopy carries some potential risks, like:

  • Bleeding: Minor bleeding is possible at the insertion site, but excessive bleeding is uncommon.
  • Infection: As with any medical procedure, there’s a slight risk of infection.
  • Reactions to anesthesia or sedation: Some individuals might experience mild side effects like nausea or dizziness.
  • Perforation (a tear in the organ wall): This is a very rare but serious complication.

Be aware of potential signs requiring immediate medical attention, such as:

  • Severe abdominal pain that worsens over time
  • Persistent fever or chills
  • Difficulty breathing or chest pain
  • Excessive bleeding or vomiting
